Poinsettia Progress

The 2010 poinsettia crop is progressing nicely, despite the scorching temperatures of this summer.

Below are a few photos of the poinsettias we are growing, and their sizes as of September 9, 2010.

White 'Snowcap" Poinsettias in 10-inch pots; September 9, 2010 - Week 10, 3 days after pinch
Both White 'Snowcap' and 'Freedom Red' Poinsettias in 10-inch pots, September 10, 2010 - week 10, 3 days after pinch
Both White 'Snowcap' and 'Freedom Red' Poinsettias in 8-inch pots, September 10, 2010 - week 10, 3 days after pinch
'Freedom Red' Poinsettias in 8-inch pots - September 10, 2010 - week 10, 3 days after pinch

Tracking the progress of the poinsettias to be sold as single plants in 8-inch pots, planted 7/9/10:

Freedom Red, 7/17/10 - week 1 in 4" pots, 2" tall
Freedom Red, 8/5/10 - week 4 in 4" pots, 3.5" tall
Freedom Red, 9/10/10 - Week 10 in 8" pots, 8" tall
The poinsettias to be sold as single plants in 8-inch pots were started in smaller 4-inch pots, then "potted up" into 8-inch pots in week #6 of their growth.  They, along with all of the poinsettias, were "pinched" on 9/7/10 to encourage more branching, resulting in more flowers per plant.

Tracking the progress of poinsettias to be sold as three-plants-per-pot, in 10-inch pots, planted 7/9/10:

Freedom Red, 7/17/10 - week 1 in 10" pots, 3" tall

Freedom Red, 8/5/10 - week 4 in 10" pots, 5.5" tall
Freedom Red, 9/10/10 - Week 10 in 10" pots, 8" tall

And just so you know what kind of heat these poinsettias had to tolerate this summer... here is a picture that was taken of the thermostat in our greenhouse.  The picture was taken in the early afternoon on August 5, 2010.  Our thermostat only indicates double digits... so the "1" in the 128 degree reading isn't shown, but we can assure you, it was felt!
