Urano Orange Belgian Mums - September 24, 2010

We're open for the Fall season at The Green Thumbs.  The flower buds on some of our mums are beginning to break and show come color!  The later-blooming varieties are coming along nicely, too.

As the weather cools, and the days get shorter, more and more of our mums will begin to bloom.  Come get yours now, while there's still a great selection.

The 'Camina' Red Belgian Mums are just showing the first hints of color.  As of September 24, they are, on average, 9-inches tall (this measurement, and all following measurements are the heights of the topgrowth of the plant, from the soil level to the top of the plant.)

Cesaro Yellow Belgian Mum, September 24, 2010

It will be a few weeks before the blooms of the yellow Cesaro Belgian Mums begin to open.  As of September 24, these plants were, on average, 9 1/2-inches tall.

Fiotto Bronze Belgian Mum, September 24, 2010

The 'Fiotto' bronze Belgian Mums were 11-inches tall as of September 24.  Their flower buds haven't yet begun to show any signs of color, but it shouldn't be long before they do.

Padre Lemon Yellow Belgian Mum, September 24, 2010

The 'Padre Lemon Yellow' is the largest of the three yellow varieties of Belgian Mums that we grow.  As of September 24, it measures 11-inches tall.  It is still a couple of weeks away from beginning to show any signs of it's lemon-yellow-colored blooms.

The larger of the two orange varieties of Belgian Mums that we grow, the Padre Orange is 13-inches tall as of September 24.  No signs of the orange bloom color yet... still a couple of weeks away.

Terano White Belgian Mum, September 24, 2010

It's not easy to find a mum with a pure white bloom, but that's what we've got with the 'Terano' Belgian Mums that we grow.  These are a little bit later-blooming variety than the rest, but they are well worth the wait!  They measure in at 7 1/2-inches tall as of September 24.

The 'Urano Orange' is the earlier-blooming variety of the two orange mums that we grow.  Many of our 'Urano Orange' mums are dotted with bright orange buds, and they are really selling well.  They measure 8 1/2-inches tall, on average, as of September 24.

You can see the number of buds beginning to open in the photo below.  The photo at the top of this page, is a closeup of one of the 'Urano Orange' blooms.

Urano Yellow Belgian Mum, September 24, 2010

The 'Urano' varieties of Belgian Mums are some of the earlier-blooming varieties that we grow.  These 'Urano Yellow' Belgian Mums haven't begun to show any color as of September 24, but it shouldn't be long.  They are measuring 8 1/2-inches tall.

Belgian Mums are the kind of mums that come back every year.  Best of all, when they come back next spring, they won't need to be pinched... ever!  When you plant these Belgian Mums in the ground, be sure to place them in a location that receives at least a half day of sunlight, and in a place that drains well.  The quickest way to kill one of these mums is to give it too much water.  They don't like wet feet!  And, give them plenty of room.  Each of these mums will be at least twice it's current size when it comes back next year, and in many cases, they will be three times as large next year.

All of our Belgian Mums are grown in 10-inch pots,

and are priced at just $7.50 (plus tax) each.

Mums will be ready to sell soon

The mums are setting their flower buds, and they will be ready to sell by our opening date for the Fall Season on Thursday, September 23.

Although there is no color showing yet on the flower buds, some of the earlier-blooming varieties, such as Cesaro Yellow and Padre Orange, should begin to show a little color in the coming weeks.

You can see how the mums have progressed since our clients planted them in mid-July.

The photo at the right shows the mums at week #4 after planting.  The same 'Camina' red Belgian Mum that is pictured above, is now 2 1/2 - inches tall in week #4.

The same 'Camina' red Belgian mum that is pictured above at Week #1 and Week #4 is pictured at the right in week #10.  At this stage, the mum has reached 7 inches in height.

All mums are Belgian Mums, which come back year after year and never need to be pinched.

Poinsettia Progress

The 2010 poinsettia crop is progressing nicely, despite the scorching temperatures of this summer.

The poinsettias to be sold as single plants in 8-inch pots were started in smaller 4-inch pots, then "potted up" into 8-inch pots in week #6 of their growth.  They, along with all of the poinsettias, were "pinched" on 9/7/10 to encourage more branching, resulting in more flowers per plant.

And just so you know what kind of heat these poinsettias had to tolerate this summer... here is a picture that was taken of the thermostat in our greenhouse.  The picture was taken in the early afternoon on August 5, 2010.  Our thermostat only indicates double digits... so the "1" in the 128 degree reading isn't shown, but we can assure you, it was felt!
